Areas We Evaluate and Treat
Southport Speech and Language is dedicated to providing high-quality, individualized speech therapy services that prioritize a child's strengths, and tailors therapy to their unique needs. Read below to find out more about the specialized services we proudly provide.
01
Early Intervention / Late Talkers

A late talker is a child who is not developing expressive language as expected for their age. This results in frustration for the child and the child relying on others to "just know" what they want. Therapy includes caregiver education & training to learn skills and strategies that can be implemented at home, within everyday life.
Early intervention is key! The "wait and see" approach is outdated and can further delay a child's ability to develop functional language.
02
Speech Sound Disorders
A speech sound disorder impacts a child's ability to correctly use different sounds when speaking. This may look like a child using one sound for another, like "wabbit" for "rabbit", or leaving out sounds, like "ba" for "bat". Lisps and sound distortions are also included in this category. We also offer treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech.
Therapy helps improve a child's ability to be understood by their communication partners, or their speech intelligibility, which can reduce frustration and increase a child's independence.

03
Autism

We are experienced in using a variety of approaches to support and encourage communication for children on the autism spectrum. This includes the use of multimodal communication to support the method of communication the child prefers, whether that is verbal or another way, with the main goal being to decrease frustration and increase independence!

We have additional training in Gestalt Language Processing and implementing treatment based on the Natural Language Acquisition approach.
04
AAC
Not every child is able to access verbal communication, but that does NOT mean they don't have wants, needs, and feelings to communicate. We believe every child deserves access to a communication method that can increase independence and reduce frustration directly related to communication.

We can provide support for:
-
Trialing and securing funding for an AAC device for your child
-
Parent education and support for customizing your child's speech device
